In April 2011 we visited the Boberger Niederung nature reserve, which is located in the Hamburg districts of Billwerder and Lohbrügge, a few kilometres south-east of the centre of Hamburg, and just one of many nature reserves in and around Hamburg. This is a unique tract of land that features both marshland and moorland, as well as inland dunes and a quarry lake that is popular with swimmers. It’s also the home to Hamburger Aero-Club Boberg e.V. – a glider club.
Apart from being a wildlife sanctuary, this is a great place to go if you just want to get away from it all and take a quiet stroll in the countryside or have a picnic. Having said that, as with most parks in Hamburg there is a café where you can buy food, beverages, soft drinks and beer. In the summer, you can sit outside the café and watch the gliders taking off and landing.
