In July of 2017 we enjoyed a family outing to the Hamburger Dom. Our group consisted of Gatti, myself, Gatti's brother Detlev, his wife Wendy and son Sammy, and two of Wendy's sisters from Malaysia.
The Hamburger Dom is a fair held in the Heiligengeistfeld fairground in Hamburg three times a year - one of the biggest fairs held in Germany, with ten million or so visitors each year.
The name is derived from the fact that the fair was originally held in front of Hamburg Cathedral. The cathedral itself was demolished early in the 19th century, but the name "Dom" was retained, even though it was subsequently held at different locations.
The main attractions at the Hamburger Dom are the numerous fairground rides, some of which are truly impressive. Gatti loves to go on these rides with our nephew Sammy. The rest of us would rather stay on the ground! There are also many other fairground attractions including, of course, plenty of food and drink stalls.
Whilst the Dom is in operation, the organisers put on a spectacular weekly firework display. This occurs each Friday evening at 23:30, and can be seen (and heard!) from many parts of the city.
