F.A. Morris (Knitwear)

I quit my job with Norton Industrial Ceramics in January 1978, having accepted a position as production control manager with F.A. Morris (Knitwear) in Leek. Several of us quit at the same time due to grievances we had with the office manager.

As it turned out, he was dismissed and I was asked to change my mind about leaving by the financial director at Norton, who obviously saw some potential in me. However, having already accepted the post with F.A. Morris I felt obligated to honour that commitment.

My job with F.A. Morris entailed recording all incoming sales orders, calculating the quantity of wool and other materials required in order to manufacture the products ordered, and ensuring that we had sufficient materials in stock to fulfil the order. I was also responsible for scheduling production runs in the factory.

In the end I was only with F.A. Morris for just over a year. I left their employ in February of 1979, due to the fact that the production manager, a guy called Eddy who had been with the company for decades, obviously resented the fact that I had been hired without him being consulted. He made my life as difficult as possible for twelve months, and I eventually decided to seek other employment.

Ironically, when I later met him in the street one day, he remarked that he wished I had not left, as my replacement was a "waste of space". Well, Eddy, it just goes to show that you live and learn - even at your age!
